Croydon Against The Arena (www.catarena.org) is a site dedicated to opposing Croydon Council's plans to build an arena on land adjacent to East Croydon station.

This site has been created to provide a news source and public forum for the citizens of Croydon who are opposed to the plans of Croydon Council and Arrowcroft to compulsory purchase the land adjacent to East Croydon station, in order to construct an arena.

All contributions, news items and comments welcome.

The doorstep feedback received by the CRACC candidate, Colin Cole, is very favourable.

Croydon's Green Image

As we all know, Croydon Council is very keen to promote its "green and environmentally friendly" image.

We are constantly being told by the council that Croydon is greener and cleaner. Unfortunately for the councilors, ensconced in their bunker in Katherine Street, reality is a cruel mistress and often serves to contradict their deluded claims.

A walk down Dingwall road, for example, should cure even the most deluded members of Council that their claim to have improved the image and environment of Croydon is nonsense.

Maybe that is why Dingwall Road has undergone something of a transformation in the last week?

You will recall that on one side of the road, the hapless residents of Croydon are presented with decaying and crumbling office buildings awash with graffiti and filth?

On the other side there is a vast wasteland which was, until last week, half hidden by a crumbling ugly concrete wall.

Good news, the wall has been knocked down and replaced by yet another display of the rapidly spawning hoardings that now seem to be the common feature of the Croydon landscape.

The hoardings have even been painted green, doubtless to reinforce the council's "green image", no less than three times in the last week; each coat being a darker shade of green, than the one before.

Some may be deluded into thinking that this is an attempt by Croydon Council, and its associates, to show that they really are improving the image of the borough.

Sadly no!

On the 4th of May this year the councilors face re-election, the hoardings and painting of the hoardings is nothing more than a cheap means of trying to convince the electorate that things in Croydon really are about to improve. This technique of covering up sites and areas that offend is usually employed by third world dictators.

It seems that the council have now descended to a new level.

CRACC makes the following pledges to the people of Croydon:

CRACC will cut the current disgraceful levels of council tax.

CRACC will declare UDI for Croydon from London, thus saving the £36M charge from the Greater London Authority.

CRACC will vote against the closure of Crosfield.

CRACC will place council workers on the same level as the taxpayers and workers of Croydon, by abolishing the final salary pension scheme that the council enjoys at our expense.

CRACC will fast track urban redevelopment projects, eg the proposed arena development for Dingwall Road will be vetoed in favour of a more appropriate and speedier project.

CRACC will force new office developments to include well designed, aesthetically pleasing and functional/accessible public spaces in their designs (as is required in New York).

CRACC will fast track compulsory purchase orders on derelict properties that have lain idle for an excessive period of time.

CRACC will levy an extra tax on theme bars and nightclubs, to pay for the extra work put in by the police and other services in cleaning up the mess left behind by the patrons of these establishments.

CRACC will take proactive countermeasures to eradicate the unacceptable levels of street crime, and anti social behaviour that is ruining the borough. Those individuals convicted of such behaviour will be named and shamed and placed in public stocks.

Croydon Council Tax - Not Value for Money

92% of people who took part in a recent poll carried out by the Croydon Guardian, said that they do not believe they are getting value for money for their council tax.

Given that the tax bill keeps rising, 6.3% this year and a compound increase of 52% over the past three years, this is hardly surprising.

May the 4th will give the voters of Croydon the opportunity to vote this wasteful council out of office.

Croydon Caught Up In Labour Loans Row

According to The Times, John Prescott made a decision to support Andrew Rosenfeld's company's (Minerva) plans to redevelop Park Place in Croydon after Rosenfeld had loaned £1M to Labour.

According to The Times:

"Prescott killed the rival scheme, put forward by a consortium called Whitgift, by rejecting its appeal against an earlier refusal by inspectors to give it planning permission."

Prescott denies this and another allegation. Prescott confirmed that he had received the planning applications, but said he felt the decisions should be made locally.

"I passed it over to Croydon and (the other application) City of London Corporation.

They made the decision, not me."

Labour Regime in Croydon Running Scared

In a clear sign of panic within the ruling regime of Croydon Council, senior Labour ministers and their acolytes have been drafted in to make brief appearances in the London Borough of Croydon over the past few weeks.

Yesterday the Prime minister's wife, Cherie Blair, visited St Philip's Church in Beech Road, Croydon; where she had tea with clerics, councillors and members of the congregation.

Last week her husband "dropped in" to Croydon.

It is very clear that Labour know that the "game is up", and that they will receive an absolute "drubbing" in the forthcoming local elections on the 4th of May.

Croydon Council Tax Up Again

Croydon Council, not content with presiding over the ongoing decay of this borough, will be putting council tax up again this year.

No surprises there then!

The rise for 2006 will be 6.3%. In case they have forgotten, inflation is around 2%.

The rise for 2005 was 5%

The rise in 2004 was 7%

The rise in 2003 was 27%

Despite these inflation busting rises, the council have still managed to bankrupt themselves and continue to waste our money.

Not very impressive!

I would remind the council that the council elections take place this May, the time when the ratepayers of Croydon have their say.
